INTRODUCTION: Solid waste management in Brazil is a complex and multifaceted issue that faces significant challenges. The country generates a substantial amount of waste daily, and in many municipalities, the infrastructure for collection, treatment, and disposal is inadequate to meet the demand. This situation can lead to environmental, public health, and socioeconomic problems. One of the socioeconomic issues addressed in this project focuses on the activity of recyclable material collectors, known as “carrinheiros,” not as a problem but as an important activity for contemporary cities that generates positive outcomes in terms of ecosystem services. AIMS: The main aim of this research is to highlight the role of carrinheiros as ecosystem service providers in the city of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, and to carry out extension activities to improve the quality of life of carrinheiros in a selected community. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The project’s methodology will be divided into two main stages: the Theoretical and Conceptual Review, which will delve into relevant concepts and topics using a systematic literature review approach, and the Experimental Analysis, which will involve designing and conducting a survey to quantify the number of carrinheiros throughout the municipality of Curitiba RESULTS: As the main result of this project, the constant contact with the community of recyclable material collectors in Vila Torres can be highlighted, where social, educational, and awareness actions were carried out, always emphasizing the improvement of the ”carrinheiros” quality of life and dignity. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: A clearer understanding of the role of carrinheiros in providing ecosystem services and raising awareness of the importance of recognizing and valuing this activity.
