INTRODUCTION: To better comprehend Physics concepts, it is important to know their origins and how they were developed. However, students are hardly exposed to the history of the scientific concepts they are taught. According to Klein (1972, p. 16) apud Matthews (1995, p. 173), this is mainly due to the divergent ways physicists and historians deal with knowledge. Unlike historians, physicists adopt a more objective approach to facts. However, Matthews (1995) underscores that learning the history of science can bring more meaning and context for the student to grasp difficult concepts. That is why Open Educational Resources (OER) are important for students and teachers to understand the history of science. OER are educational materials in the
public domain. They can teach anyone about the roots of science concepts. AIMS: The aim of this research was to develop an OER in the form of a blog. The blog would contain a text explaining the Big Bang Theory for the readers to better understand the history of the universe and hence, the origin of Physics concepts. Moreover, the blog would present the reader with suggestions of resources related to the Big Bang Theory and other concepts that can be learned prior to learning the Big Bang. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The blog was developed after bibliographic research on the Big Bang Theory. I accessed videos to first understand the main ideas behind the theory. Subsequently, I looked at papers, articles, and other websites to delve deeper into the theory. In addition, I read some sections of the book “Física
para Cientistas e Engenheiros”, by Gene Mosca and Paul Allen Tipler. RESULTS: The result was a blog with three main sections: one with a text on the Big Bang Theory, another with suggestions of topics the reader could learn before learning the Big Bang, and another with other sources in different forms the reader could use to comprehend the theory. In the text, I first addressed how Hubble’s Law influenced the development of the Big Bang Theory. This law states that the velocity of a galaxy is proportional to its distance from another galaxy. Hubble came to this conclusion after realizing that galaxies
that are far away from us emit a red light. This is the Doppler Effect. Then, I talked about the influence of Einstein’s General Relativity Theory on the Big Bang Theory. After that, the text uncovers cosmic cataclysms that originated the universe, and it also addresses the first stages of the universe. On the other sections, there are multiple suggestions of sources on numerous formats, such as videos and documentaries. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The final product of this research, the blog, was well-developed because the text contained in it explains the Big Bang in a detailed and didactic way. Thus, the blog can make more people have access to knowledge about the history of science. Because of that, the main objective was achieved. However, I could have talked more about the proofs of the Big Bang Theory.
