INTRODUCTION: Grief is defined as a process experienced in reaction to a loss, which begins when a significant situation ceases. Given the sanitary conditions in the world since the beginning of 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the child grief has become an even more relevant and present theme. The pandemic has significantly increased the number of deaths because of the disease, exposing children to conditions of drastic change and emotional vulnerability. In this sense, the presence of sensitive and receptive people within schools, such as teachers and other education professionals, is important, so that the risk of developing significant problems in relation to mental health in these children is minimized, making the issue of childhood grief extremely relevant. – OBJECIVES: To characterize behaviors that constitute the class “handling child grief” in a school context using the Programming of Conditions for Behaviors Development (PCDC). – MATERIALS AND METHOD: The procedure’s first step consisted of defining search terms by consulting the Thesaurus, selecting and retrieving information sources that addressed the research topic from the combination of keywords and inclusion criteria in the portal of CAPES journals, theses and dissertations. Then, components of behaviors related to the class “handling child grief” were identified in excerpts from the information sources, checking possible behaviors that constitute the class, evaluating the language presented and organizing those in a list. – RESULTS: After searching in the CAPES portals, it was possible to retrieve a single source of information that matches the previously defined inclusion criteria. Using the study by Ducy et al. (2018), source of information retrieved, the excerpts that mentioned the constituent behaviors of the class “handling child grief” were selected. Those excerpts had their antecedent classes, response classes, consequence classes and behavior classes registered, accounting 16, 15, 14 and 15 classes, respectively. – FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Through the final listing of behavior classes, it was possible to group them into categories based on their similarities. The final list allowed the possibility of deriving and extracting from information sources that address the management of grief in childhood within the school context by school agents. In general, the classes show the importance of involving the family in the process of grief elaboration, since some of the behaviors presented by school agents involve the understanding of the family’s reality in relation to the grief, with the intention of helping the bereaved student, in addition to pointing out the entire school community involvement in the process, not limited only to teachers. In addition, the identification of only one source of information that mentioned the necessary behaviors to be presented by professionals in the school context, shows the emerging need for more studies in the area, since grief in childhood, especially after the COVID-19, has become an even more relevant topic.
